Do You Need Another Reason to take the Stairs? They Give You Energy!
If you are one of those people who gets up and goes straight to the coffee maker each morning, but you have worries about getting too much caffeine or the coffee staining your teeth, the is an alternative.
You can do some simple stair walking as an alternative to drinking coffee, or other forms of caffeine and you will feel more energized, a new study urges.
The analysis, comprised school girls who said they were constantly sleep-deprived, meaning that received less than 6.5 hours of sleep per night. On separate days, the girls consumed caffeine capsules, each with 50 milligrams of caffeine (roughly the same amount that is in a can of soda) or a placebo, or spent 10 minutes walking up and down stairs (about 30 floors in total) at an easy pace.
“We found, in both the caffeine and the placebo conditions, that there was not much change in how they felt. But with exercise they did feel more energetic and vigorous,” said study co-author Patrick O’Connor, a professor at the University of Georgia’s Department of Kinesiology.
The energy boost from walking was instant, but short lived, he explained in a university news release. The researchers wished to concentrate an easy and convenient method to keep office workers active.
“Office workers can go outside and walk, but weather can be less than ideal. It has never rained on me while walking the stairs,” O’Connor said.
He said even a brief walk down and up the stairs looks to make workers feel refreshed and more inspired.
So if you get that after lunch drowsiness, a quick trip up and down the office stairs a few times, could help, so there is no longer the need to fill up on more coffee or energy drinks.
The research was published online in the journal Physiology and Behavior.
