Give your Metabolism a Boost with These Snacks
Many Americans find it hard to lose weight, you diet and exercise but those extra pounds refuse to come off. According to the latest research by the United States Department of Agriculture, our snacking habits are adding way too many calories and not enough nutrients to our diets. Susan Bowerman, RD, assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, says that it doesn’t have to be this way, citing that when snacking is done right, it “keeps your energy levels up and gives you more opportunities to get in all your nutritional needs.”
Which snacks burn fat?
Eating snacks can be simple, but you have to eat with the right ratio of nutrients and the right amount of calories, to help keep your body energized and which in turn helps you lose weight. Combining protein and exercise fuels the growth of lean muscle mass, which will boost your metabolic rate and burn more calories. Fiber, meanwhile, helps to improve digestion and also keeps you from binging on fats and sugars. So while no food can literally “burn fat” while you eat it, smart choices and these ingredients can help your body operate at its maximum efficiency. Bowerman suggests snacks under 200 calories, with 10 grams of protein and close to 5 grams of fiber.
An apple and skim milk
“Almost any fruit is going to make a great snack, but you usually want to pair it with a bit of protein to make it more satisfying,” says Bowerman, “Unlike carbohydrates, which get used up relatively quickly, protein will help sustain your energy and hunger levels for a couple of hours.”
A good fruit pairing would be one large apple and one cup of skim milk. This duo will give you 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber for just over 200 calories.
